Volunteering at Ikaika Waterman’s Academy
Since 2023, I have volunteered with Ikaika Hawaii as a Level 2 Training Leader and Volunteer Coach. What began as my own participation in the program evolved into a leadership role where I mentor youth paddlers ages 5–12 in water safety, paddling technique, and the ASPIRE leadership philosophy. In addition to coaching, I participate in Ikaika Hawaii’s leadership program and contribute articles that help share the organization’s mission and impact within the community.
My primary responsibility is helping young athletes develop confidence and skills in the water while creating a safe, encouraging environment. Working with children requires patience, communication, and adaptability, as every athlete learns at a different pace. I strive to be a positive role model by demonstrating teamwork, responsibility, and perseverance both on and off the water.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this service has been watching young paddlers grow in confidence. Many children begin the program hesitant or unsure of their abilities, but through consistent encouragement and practice, they become more comfortable, capable, and enthusiastic participants. Seeing that transformation has shown me the importance of mentorship and the lasting impact that positive guidance can have on young people.
Through this experience, I have developed stronger leadership skills and gained a deeper appreciation for service. Balancing my coaching responsibilities with my own athletic training and competition schedule has taught me effective time management and commitment. I have also learned that leadership is not simply about instructing others—it is about listening, supporting, and helping people reach their potential.
